CEOs and Boards Are Aligned on AI in Theory, but Divided in Practice
CEOs and boards agree on AI governance in principle but diverge on understanding, pace and accountability: about 60% of CEOs think boards are rushing AI transformation, while 75% of directors rate their AI knowledge at or above peers.
Summary
In the first Split Decisions survey of 625 CEOs and board members, BCG finds five gaps. More than half of CEOs want boards to see past AI hype, and less confident directors are more prone to FOMO. Both sides say the executive team should lead, but CEOs carry the load (47% versus 39% reported by boards) and weigh AI ROI more in their evaluations (over a third versus about a quarter). About 80% of both groups want measurable AI literacy required for board membership.
