Five Truths and One Lie About Corporate Transformation

BCG Henderson Institute · Article · 2 Apr 2024 · Empirical research · Editor's rating: ★★★ Essential

Only about a quarter of transformations create value in both the short and long term; acting before performance slips, changing leadership, thinking long term and running a formal program lift TSR, and no company is exempt.

Summary

BCG finds only 26% of corporate transformations over two decades created value in both the short and long term. Five truths: fix things before they break (preemptive +2.7 points of three-year TSR); leadership makes or breaks it (a leadership change +4.1 points over five years); you cannot cut your way to greatness (investor expectations drive over two thirds of year-one outperformance, while revenue growth 43% and cost reduction 32% dominate at five years); long-term orientation (+12.5 points); and a formal program (+5.9 points). The lie is that you are special.

Editor's opinion

The value here is the decomposition -- knowing that leadership change alone is worth ~4pp of TSR is far more actionable than a generic 'act early, invest for the long term.'
