What GenAI’s Top Performers Do Differently

BCG · Article · 30 Jan 2024 · Empirical research · Editor's rating: No stars

Only about 10% of companies scale GenAI across the enterprise, and what separates them is five capabilities (value-linked projects, modern infrastructure, data, leadership backing, responsible-AI guardrails), not spend; laggards can catch up with a few priority use cases, early partners and bespoke governance.

Summary

BCG surveyed more than 150 senior executives in 10 sectors and drew on nearly 200 client projects to split companies into scalers (about 10%), pilots (about 50%) and no-action firms (about 40%). Scalers are three times more likely to have modern, modular IT, twice as likely to have strong data pipelines, and over 70% tie projects explicitly to value. A $20 billion-revenue firm could gain $500 million to $1 billion in profit. Laggards should pick a few priority applications, use partners early and build GenAI-specific governance.

Editor's opinion

Only about one in ten companies scales generative AI across the organization, and these leaders win by focusing on a few high-value use cases, reshaping work and upskilling people.
