Data Dominates
With algorithms now table stakes, advantage comes from identifying advantaged data tied to the business vision, yet most companies lack the data maturity to exploit it.
Summary
Algorithms no longer differentiate; the right data does. BCG's surveys show only 27% of companies reached advanced data maturity in 2019 and about 10% met the data targets set in 2016, held back by weak vision, siloed data, scaling gaps and culture. The authors tell executives to ask four questions: what is my advantaged data, how will I collect it (customers, partnerships, acquisition, ecosystem orchestration), how will I monetize it, and what operating model do I need. John Deere and an oil company illustrate the approach.
Editor's opinion
The 'data beats algorithms' thesis is now a familiar idea, and the survey evidence behind it is thin and dated.
