Investors Believe in AI—Now They Want Results
Investors expect AI to improve corporate fundamentals but not to decide winners, so companies must pair bold AI bets with financial discipline and explicit priorities, trade-offs and milestones to earn confidence.
Summary
BCG's 2026 Global Investor Survey of more than 500 institutional investors managing about $35 trillion finds that 87% expect AI to materially improve corporate fundamentals within two years, yet 56% see markets as too optimistic on AI and only 22% see it as a source of sustainable differentiation. Only 57% think companies report appropriately on their AI agendas. Market return expectations have slipped to 6.9% a year amid conflicts, interest rates, US policy and AI. Investors want bold long-term bets funded with discipline, and fewer than half accept margin dilution beyond 1 to 2 points.
Editor's opinion
Investors believe in AI's potential but want proof of returns, so companies should pair bold long-term bets with financial discipline and make priorities and milestones explicit.
