Why Accelerated Resource Allocation Matters in the Age of AI
Competitive advantage in the AI era comes less from predicting the future than from reallocating resources faster: self-described first movers are over three times as likely as late movers to shift 20%+ of resources year over year, and they achieve it through alignment, performance-based decisions and frequent small corrections.
Summary
A survey of 1,205 executives (April 2026) finds 39% aspire to be AI first movers, yet fewer than half of those say they are first movers today. Real first movers differ in how they allocate: 32% reallocated 20%+ of resources versus 10% of late movers, and they align on trade-offs, fund by performance rather than politics (barriers 2.6x less common), use DCF metrics and adjust more often. They are also 3x likelier to use AI in allocation, and 5x for monitoring external disruption.
Editor's opinion
Real McKinsey survey data on reallocation speed, but the 'act like a first mover' message is a familiar theme in this research family.
