The 2026 Value Creators Rankings: Strong Markets, Hard Strategic Choices

BCG · Article · 30 Jun 2026 · Industry report · Editor's rating: ★★ Recommended

Value creation leadership has rotated from technology to asset-heavy sectors for the first time in over a decade, but industry is not destiny: company-level capital allocation, execution and investor management determine TSR.

Summary

BCG's 2026 ranking of 2,368 companies in 35 industries, using 2021-2025 average TSR, shows leadership rotating to asset-heavy sectors: aerospace and defense, oil and gas, mining, metals and construction hold five of the top six places, and banks benefit from higher rates. Software and IT services fell 27 places to the bottom five as AI monetization is uncertain and AI begins to disrupt the software value chain, while AI value accrues to chips, data centers and power. Top-quartile companies beat the 12 percent market median in all but three industries. With the US expectation premium at its highest since 1926, leaders must act like activist investors on cost, capital allocation and portfolio reshaping, and bring investors along.

Editor's opinion

BCG's TSR-based value-creator ranking is real capital-markets data, not a survey opinion, and the sector rotation away from software is a genuine structural signal.

Key concepts

Value Creators rankings · TSR disaggregation · Expectation premium · Industry is not destiny · Portfolio reshaping
