Why Some Companies Grow Rapidly While Others Stall

Harvard Business Review · Article · 19 Feb 2026 · Empirical research · Paywalled · Editor's rating: No stars

Rapid growth depends less on markets or budgets than on how aligned, empowered and equipped leadership teams are.

Summary

Rao, Helming, El Makkaoui, Petrova and Nader surveyed more than 500 senior revenue leaders across industries and ownership types. Most organizations grew last year, but only 29% achieved rapid growth above 10%, and smaller companies outperformed larger ones. The authors find the difference lies mainly in how leadership teams operate, and conclude that growth accelerates when leaders are aligned, empowered and equipped to act.

Editor's opinion

A fairly generic 'leadership alignment drives growth' conclusion without strong differentiation from similar pieces already in the tracker.

Key concepts

Rapid growth drivers · Leadership team alignment · Small firm outperformance
